Despite the fact that more than half of the population live in the Capital city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolian boys (Nomad or not) learn to ride horses from as young as 3 years old.  It is a history and tradition that goes back over 1,000 years.

In 2000, 2009 and 2010, an extreme winter called DZUD in Mongolian, claimed the lives of 20% of the nation's livestock who froze to death where they stood. Many nomads migrated to the towns and city centres with each successive dzud, making those who choose to remain nomadic even more remarkable.
